French- and Spanish-speaking faculty take skills to middle
school

This spring, a trio of Johns Hopkins professors is
planting the seeds of foreign language
learning at the Guilford Elementary-Middle School in
Baltimore. The pilot program, which started in January,
features full-time faculty from the Department of
German and Romance Languages and Literatures who are
teaching French and Spanish at a school that
previously had no foreign language component.

Minority recruitment recognized
Johns Hopkins cardiologist and physician in chief
Myron "Mike" Weisfeldt is the recipient of
the 2008 Diversity Award from the Association of Professors
of Medicine, an organization whose
members come from across the United States and Canada.
Presented Thursday during the
association's annual meeting in Miami, the award recognizes
efforts that Weisfeldt has made a
hallmark of his tenure since he took over as director of
the Department of Medicine six years ago and
began to implement a formal program to increase diversity
among residents, fellows and the
professorial ranks.

SPH to collaborate with Abu Dhabi Health
Authority
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has
signed a long-term agreement with the Health Authority-Abu
Dhabi to develop research, educational and public health
programs in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The 10-year
agreement was signed Feb. 24 in Abu Dhabi by Michael J.
Klag, dean of the Bloomberg School, and HAAD Chairman
Ahmed Mubarak Al-Mazroui.
