Wednesday was the day for the Johns Hopkins community
to show its colors, whether they
were the academic duo of gold and sable or the athletic
pairing of Columbia blue and white. All Johns
Hopkins gear was in order, in fact, as faculty, staff and
students gathered informally in Homewood's
Levering Hall to celebrate the founding of the university
on Feb. 22, 1876. The Commemoration Day
event, which included lots of birthday cakes and a display
of historical photos, had been postponed
from the official date because of bad weather. The garb
marking the day — a black long-sleeved
T-shirt bearing a likeness of Johns Hopkins on a gold
circle — was given to the first 500 students who
arrived wearing Johns Hopkins paraphernalia.
