Biomedical engineering students who have spent the past year designing and constructing innovative medical devices and tools will showcase their work at a public program on Tuesday, May 6. Student Design Day activities will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mountcastle Auditorium of the Preclinical Teaching Building on the East Baltimore campus.

The event spotlights the achievements of biomedical engineering undergraduates and master's degree students who have enrolled in a design team course. Each team, made up of eight to 10 students, is assigned to produce a new tool or device that is needed by health professionals. Many of the current sponsors are faculty members in the School of Medicine.

According to the Department of Biomedical Engineering, over the past five years, these design teams have completed 58 medical device projects, received eight provisional patents (with three patent applications pending), entered into two licensing agreements and formed two start-up companies.

At Tuesday's program, several groups will present oral reports on their projects from 9:15 to 11 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., a guest lecture will be presented by Karen Talmadge, co-founder and chief science officer of Kyphon. Design team prize distribution will begin at 12:15 p.m., followed by lunch and a student poster session.
