Close to 2,000 Johns Hopkins staff, faculty, retirees,
their families and friends marked the
official start of summer at the annual Johns Hopkins
Picnic, held June 20 on the grounds of Johns
Hopkins at Eastern. The weather cooperated, the volunteers
were friendly and helpful, the food was
delicious — everyone seemed to have a great evening.
In addition to excellent picnic fare and fun, the
Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs,
in line with Johns Hopkins' environmental efforts, staged
this as the first "green" picnic.
Caterers Zeffert and Gold provided earth-friendly food
service, using plates made from
potatoes, cups and utensils from corn, and napkins from
recycled material, all while serving food
requiring fewer utensils and providing water in jugs
instead of individual bottles. Even the tickets,
posters and event staff T-shirts were colored green.
Attendees enjoyed themselves playing games and
visiting with Bugs Bunny and Bill the Balloon
Dude, but the event staff also said they had a great time,
as noted by Geraline Coates from JHH
Outpatient Surgery. "It is always a pleasure and enjoyment
to volunteer my services at the yearly
picnic," she said. "Please put me on for next year."
