When the Montgomery County Campus opened in 1988, its
lone building stood more or less
solitarily, among rolling pastures and farm fields. The
only major neighbor of the Rockville, Md.,
campus was the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, which had
opened nine years earlier.

Looking at the JHU of the future
Johns Hopkins finished its last strategic plan in
1994. It was the result of work done by the
Committee for the 21st Century, or C21, chaired by
President William R. Brody, then professor and
chair of Radiology at the School of Medicine.

Truman Foundation recognizes students,
JHU
Kurt Herzer and Sonia Sarkar, both juniors on the
Homewood campus, are among 65 students
from 55 U.S. colleges and universities to be named 2008
Truman Scholars. The prestigious award is
given each year by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Foundation to extraordinary juniors committed to
careers in public service.
