Cheers is a monthly listing of honors and
awards received by faculty, staff and students plus recent
appointments and promotions. Contributions must be
submitted in writing and be accompanied by a phone
number.

Academic Centers and Affiliates
The Institute for Policy Studies has been
honored by the Arc of Baltimore as a 2008 Employer
of Distinction, an award given to those employing
individuals with developmental disabilities who are
supported by the Arc and are provided a work environment
that allows those individuals to contribute
to their employer's success. The Arc presented Mary-Jo
Dale, administrative coordinator with IPS,
with the award at the Arc's Employers of Distinction
Breakfast.

Bayview Medical Center
Chi Chiung Grace Chen has joined the Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an assistant
professor. Chen received her medical degree from Indiana
University, completed her residency in
obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham and finished a fellowship in
female pelvic medicine, reconstructive surgery and
minimally invasive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
Robert Frank, a professor in the Department of
Cognitive Science, has been awarded a
Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture on mathematical tools
for theoretical linguistics at the University
of Trieste in Trieste, Italy, during the 2008-2009 academic
year. According to the United States
Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign
Scholarship Board, Frank is one of
approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will
travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S.
Scholar program.
Eik Kahng, an adjunct associate professor in
History of Art and curator and head of 18th- and
19th-Century Art at the Walters Art Museum, has been
selected as one of 10 art museum curators
nationwide for a fellowship at the Center for Curatorial
Leadership in New York. The aim of the
program is to equip curators with the administrative and
managerial skills necessary to take a
leadership role in an art museum.

School of Education
Edward Pajak, chair of the Department of
Teacher Development and Leadership, is a visiting
professor this fall at the School of Education in Jonkoping
University in Sweden, addressing graduate-
level classes and seminars. Pajak recently gave a
presentation on teacher development and leadership
to the Academy for School Research and Development in
Sweden. In November, he will travel to
Norway, where he will speak at the University of Tromso on
research on school supervision. Tromso is
located above the Arctic Circle and has the distinction of
being the northernmost university in the
world.

School of Medicine
Stephen Wegener, an associate professor and
director of the Division of Rehabilitation
Psychology in the Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, has been awarded a Fulbright
Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at Trinity
College in Dublin, Ireland, during the 2008�
2009 academic year. Wegener, who also holds an appointment
in the Department of Health Policy and
Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, will
focus on improving outcomes and
preventing disability for people following injury.

School of Nursing
The school has received two MarCom awards from the
Association of Marketing and
Communication Professionals: a platinum award for the
viewbook The New Face of Nursing and a gold
award for the magazine Johns Hopkins
Nursing.

University Administration
Edgar E. Roulhac, vice provost for academic
services, has been appointed to a three-year term
as a commissioner and member of the Middle States
Commission on Higher Education, effective Jan. 1,
2009. Established in 1919, the commission —
dedicated to educational excellence and improvement
through peer evaluation and accreditation — accredits
institutions of higher education in Delaware, the
District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York,
Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin
Islands and other locations abroad.
