More than 250 guests gathered May 2 under a tent on
Homewood's Alonzo G. and Virginia G.
Decker Quadrangle to celebrate the impact of philanthropy
at Johns Hopkins and dedicate a new
institutional landmark, the Johns Hopkins Founders Wall.
Those in attendance at the dinner in-cluded many of
these founders, whose financial support to
the institution has equaled or exceeded the $7 million that
Johns Hopkins bequeathed in his will to
establish the university and hospital that bear his
name.
The evening included recognition of these donors by
student representatives to the Johns
Hopkins Alumni Council, two films and addresses from
Hopkins' collateral descendant Janie Elizabeth
"Liza" Bailey; university President Ronald J. Daniels;
Pamela P. Flaherty, chair of the university board
of trustees; and C. Michael Armstrong, chair of the Johns
Hopkins Medicine board of trustees.
During the recognition, founders received a
commemorative telescope symbolizing Hopkins'
foresight and their role in extending his vision into the
future.
Throughout the evening guests were encouraged to take
a closer look at the wall itself, which
was adjacent to the dining area. One hundred and six names
are presently engraved on the wall, which
includes space for additional names to be added in the
future.
