Slow...Going...

It's not the swallows returning to Capistrano, but each year
about this time, the turtles return to the starting line in East
Baltimore. Last Friday marked the 64th annual Turtle Derby, held
at the Pre-Clinical Courtyard behind Welch Library. Proceeds from
the event benefit the Johns Hopkins Children's Center's Child
Life Department and the hospital's Perkins Day Care Center,
although departments sponsoring first, second and third place
winners receive modest prize money.

The Turtle Derby, with its attendant carnival atmosphere,
began 42 years after longtime Hopkins utility man Benjamin Frisby
started his turtle farm near the hospital. This year's first
place winner (with a $100 purse) was Pizza, sponsored by the
Hopkins chapter of the American Medical Association.
