English Department to sponsor Hinkley Lecture

Lisa Jardine, Hinkley Visiting Professor in the English Department, will give the 1997-98 John Hinkley Memorial Lecture at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 24, in 110 Gilman.

Jardine, professor of Renaissance studies at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, will speak on "Ingenious Pursuits: Rethinking the Western Intellectual Tradition."

In addition to her academic work, Jardine is a regular contributor to BBC TV and Radio, BBC World Service and NPR All Things Considered. She is also a columnist for the Daily Telegraph and a frequent reviewer and feature writer for the Guardian, Times, Observer, New Statesman, THES and Literary Review.

The John Hinkley Memorial Lecture was established in 1951 from the estate of attorney John Hinkley to promote his interests in law and in English legal and constitutional history, and to serve the common interests of the university, the legal profession and the public. Hinkley graduated from Hopkins in 1884.


HR to hold open office hours in East Baltimore

Audrey Smith, vice president for Human Resources, has opened an office in East Baltimore, where she will hold hours during which employees are invited to share ideas and provide feedback and suggestions regarding Human Resources' policies and programs.

Located at 1830 E. Monument, in room 2-312, the office will be open the second Tuesday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. During this time, Smith may be reached at 410-614-5776. At all other times, she should be contacted at 410-516-8113.


Blood drive scheduled for this week at Homewood

On April 21 and 22, the American Red Cross will pay another visit to the Homewood campus. The local chapter, which is responsible for the blood supply in more than 80 hospitals throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia, needs more than 1,300 volunteer donors daily to meet the needs of area patients.

Pre-registered donors will be taken ahead of drop-ins; contact Peggy Jones at 410-516-8039 to reserve a time.


Mellon Fellowship awarded to senior history major

Senior Laura Lisy, a history major from Webster, N.Y., has been awarded a 1998 Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies. She is one of 97 winners recently named by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

These awards are given to college seniors and recent graduates of outstanding promise with the objective of encouraging them to pursue a doctorate in humanistic fields. They provide financial support for the first year of study in a doctoral program at any graduate school in the United States or Canada. The stipend for the new fellows will be $14,000, plus tuition and mandated fees. Lisy will pursue her doctorate at Harvard University.

During the past 15 years, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has committed over $63 million in this program.


APL recognized in Space Hall of Fame for third time

For its contributions to the Global Positioning System, APL has been inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame for the third time.

Richard B. Kershner, APL's first Space Department head, was inducted posthumously into the Hall of Fame for his role in developing satellite navigation science and technology ultimately used by GPS.

The ceremonies took place April 9 at the United States Space Foundation's 1998 National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo.

APL's previous Hall of Fame inductions were in 1988 for its Programmable Implantable Medication System and in 1991 for its role in developing the Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, known as the Mirowski device.


Glass Pavilion to host spring fashion event for women

Spring fashions for women will take to the runway in the Glass Pavilion of Levering Hall on the Homewood campus from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29.

Sponsored by Homewood/Peabody Women's Forum, Community Relations and Volunteer Services, and Union Memorial Hospital, the neighborhood event will feature fashions from Towson Town Center shops. Seating is limited; admission is free. For more information, call 410-516-4777.
