Days of Caring:
The Hopkins community
gets neighborly.
Last Wednesday the United Way of Central Maryland began its 1997 campaign. On that day, hundreds of freshmen took to the streets of Baltimore, making the United Way part of their orientation activities. Many cleaned up streams, some tidied up parks, and others spruced up schools.

With the university's official kick-off still a couple of weeks away, the Hopkins community will get in the mood this week, sponsoring its fifth Day of Caring on Thursday, Sept. 11, with staff and faculty escorting to the Baltimore Aquarium children from the Lafayette Square Day Care Center.

"The Day of Caring is another one of the real tangible ways we try to reach out to those in need in our neighborhhods, especially the children," says James Neal, the Sheridan Director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and this year's university United Way chairman. "And it certainly is a lot of fun for the Hopkins folks who participate."

This year's campaign hopes to build on last year's success, as the university, Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Applied Physics Laboratory combined to raise $1.4 million for the United Way. This year's goal is $1.49 million, and for the first time, the Hopkins campaign will report pledges jointly rather than divisionally.

"By presenting the total commitments to the campaign from all of Johns Hopkins we can demonstrate to our friends in Central Maryland, in a rather dramatic way, how much staff and faculty care about being good neighbors and helping their communities," said university President William R. Brody. "I hope everyone will participate in this very worthwhile effort."
