State Officials at FastForward East Opening
Mike Gill, Secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development, and Rob Rosenbaum, President and Executive Director of the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, participated in a panel discussion to celebrate the launch of FastForward East on Tuesday, February 10. Benjamin Wu, Deputy Secretary of DBED, Ursula Powidzki, Assistant Secretary of DBED, Tom Dann, Managing Director of the Maryland Venture Fund, and John Wasilisin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of TEDCO, also attended the event.


Augustine Commission Announces Recommendations
The Maryland Economic Development & Business Climate Commission, informally known as the “Augustine Commission,” issued its interim report and recommendations on Friday, February 13. The report included 32 recommendations, including investing in university-based technology transfer programs. The report recommended expanding the Maryland Innovation Initiative, Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative, and Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, and making capital investments in university-affiliated incubators and innovation hubs. Christy Wyskiel, Senior Advisor to the President for Enterprise Development, served on the Augustine Commission and helped develop its recommendations.


Dean Klag in Annapolis
Mike Klag, Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, visited Annapolis to meet with state policymakers on Tuesday, February 10. Dean Klag met with House Appropriations Committee Chair Maggie McIntosh and Senate Capital Budget Subcommittee Chair Ed DeGrange to advocate for full funding of the MICUA capital grant program, which includes $2.4 million for laboratory renovations at the School of Public Health. He also advocated for full funding of the Sellinger program.

HB421/SB312 Maryland Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program and Trust

This bill establishes the Maryland Secure Choice Retirement Savings Trust and Program to provide a retirement savings plan to employees of private-sector employers with at least five employees that do not already provide an employer-sponsored retirement or pension plan. The bill phases in over nine months a requirement that eligible employers make the program available to their employees through a payroll deduction. Employees of participating employers are required to participate unless they opt out. Before the program begins operation, (1) the program must secure qualification from the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a tax-favored plan and (2) it must be determined that the plan is not subject to the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).
