The Postdoc's Plight
Author's Notebook
By Joanne P. Cavanaugh

Over sandwiches picked up from Eddie's Market in Charles Village, our magazine staff listened to stories of the plight of postdoctoral fellows at the university and elsewhere. I, at least, knew very little about their existence within academia, let alone their contributions to research across the country and low pay, lack of status issues. I quickly learned a lot. I'd like to thank the postdoctoral fellows, as well as Hopkins administrators, for being soopen and honest about the problems within the system.
