Drawn to His Subjects
Artist Joe Ciardiello has drawn quirky pen-and-ink
portraits of such notables as Hilary Clinton, J.D.
Salinger, and John L. Hooker for Rolling Stone, The
Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Time, Sports
Illustrated, and a host of other national magazines.
But calling Ciardiello, who illustrated this issue's
profile of P.J. O'Rourke, a caricaturist would be a
mistake. "I really don't consider myself a caricaturist in
the traditional sense," says Ciardiello. "Generally my
drawings are portraits that I've just tweaked a bit."
Ciardiello, who lives in western New Jersey, is currently
at work on a book of portraits of such blues musicians as
Lightnin' Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt.
Open Shutter, Open Mind
Photographer John Davis, who shot a backyard portrait of
Vinny DeMarco and his family for this issue, says he tries
to be open minded about every photo shoot he does and about
every subject he photographs. The DeMarcos were "fun," he
says. "They seemed very open and willing to work with me."
In addition to doing commercial work, the Baltimore-based
photographer likes to take fine art photos with a Holga toy
camera. The plastic camera "just removes a lot of the
complexities of normal cameras and allows me to shoot more
freely and think about concepts more," he explains. Davis'
work has been published in The City Paper and
Premiere magazine. —MB
