Illustrator Stuart Bradford aimed for a "fantastic-stories kind of quality" for the art accompanying this issue's cover story, "Language by the Numbers." Bradford, who scans photographs of objects into his computer, then manipulates them into a montage using Photoshop, says he wanted his lightning-crackling mechanized "translator" to capture "the mysterious aspect of how the mind works." The Californian has worked in the field of design and illustration for the past 20 years; his work has appeared in a wide variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Smart Money, and American Lawyer.

Youthful discretion

Writer Tom Waldron has a 14-year-old son at home, so it wasn't a stretch for him to spend time with teens who'd been recruited to attend the Center for Talented Youth's summer sessions ("Bright Lights in the City"). Waldron focused on CTY's growing number of minority candidates; many of these extremely bright kids come from tough urban backgrounds. "These are really remarkable teen-agers. I was extremely impressed by their energy and maturity," he says. Waldron, who spent 17 years as a reporter at the Baltimore Sun focusing on Maryland politics and government, is currently working on a book about the sinking of the Pride of Baltimore. --SD
