Turbulent Science: Modeling the Airflow Around
'Green Energy' Wind Turbines

As energy prices rise and concerns about the environment increase, more people are turning to alternative "green" power sources such as wind turbines. Supported by a National Science Foundation grant, a team led by Johns Hopkins researchers is using smoke, laser light, model airplane propellers and a campus wind tunnel to unravel the airflow mysteries surrounding these mammoth machines.

In this short video, shot and edited by Ruthie Aslan '03, you can see full-size and model wind turbines in operation and hear Johns Hopkins researchers describe their experiments.
