Atlantic Monthly's Scott Stossel to Speak
at Johns Hopkins

Scott Stossel, managing editor of Atlantic Monthly, will discuss "The Journalism of Ideas" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the first event in this year's Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies Press and Public Policy seminar series.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place in the Shriver Hall Clipper Room on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Among the topics Stossel's talk may cover are how Atlantic Monthly bridges the gap between research and academia and the public; and the role of the media in influencing public policy, ranging from its education function to its shaping of ideas and opinions. Stossel's presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period. The event is expected to last until 5:30 p.m.

Scott Stossel is the managing editor of Atlantic Monthly magazine, where he has worked on and off since 1992. Between stints at the Atlantic, Scott worked for six years at the American Prospect magazine, where he served in turn as associate editor, executive editor and culture editor. He also taught for several years in the American Studies department at Trinity College in Hartford. Stossel's articles and essays have appeared in a wide array of publications, including the Atlantic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New Republic, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. His 2004 book, Sarge: The Life and Times of Sargent Shriver, inspired The Boston Globe to write, "Scott Stossel's superb new biography is an extraordinary achievement," while Publisher's Weekly said, "This is a superbly researched, immensely readable political biography." He is currently working on an intellectual history of the idea of anxiety. Additional biographical information is available online at www.theatlantic.com/doc/by/scott_stossel.
