Recommended Mail-Opening
Procedures for University Administrative/Clerical
Staff

Pull on a pair of gloves. Open all mail carefully. When mail opening is complete, remove gloves in following manner: Pull off first glove without touching inside of glove. Discard glove into trash can with red bag. (Red bags are not necessary in hospital buildings.)
Discard glove in a trash can with red bag. (Red bags are not necessary in hospital buildings.)
Pull glove off taking care not to allow ungloved hand to touch outside of glove.
Insert thumb of ungloved hand under cuff (inside) of remaining glove.
Immediately wash hands with soap and running water. Lather well.
Wash for at least 10 seconds. Rinse and dry well. Use paper towel to turn off faucet.
There is no need to wear gloves to perform other clerical duties.

Please Note:
Although no case of anthrax has occurred among Johns Hopkins employees and there is no reason to believe that Hopkins is being targeted or that delivery of a contaminated letter to Hopkins is likely, the university is issuing these precautionary recommendations. Gloves are available upon request from your supervisor.
