Entrepreneurial China: Professor Takes a Closer
Kellee Tsai, an assistant professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University, talks about the
National Science Foundation grant that will allow her to undertake an ambitious study of the
political orientation of private entrepreneurs.
She wants to test the assumption that economic well-being in China will naturally lead to
democratic reforms. This project comes after Tsai spent 23 months in the field, trying to find out
how the exploding entrepreneurial sector in China generates private financing for new businesses,
when such lending is illegal in China.
