Remote Command and Control:
Tank Helps Researchers Test Underwater Robot
Johns Hopkins University engineers are using a newly constructed indoor
tank filled with nearly 43,000 gallons of water to test navigation and
control equipment that allows them to direct a small underwater robot.
The robot, called the JHU Remotely Operated Vehicle, is connected by long
tether lines to computers outside the tank.
The technology developed and refined is this lab, supervised by Louis
Whitcomb, assoociate professor of mechanical engineering, is being used
in full-size robotic submersibles that are exploring some of the deepest
and most hostile parts of the ocean.
