Al Gore to Speak to Graduating
Johns Hopkins Seniors
Former Vice President Albert Gore Jr. will address
seniors graduating from The Johns Hopkins University's
schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering at their
diploma ceremony at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 26.
Gore will also be awarded the honorary degree of
doctor of humane letters.
The ceremony will take place at Homewood Field, the
stadium on the northern end of the university's Homewood
campus at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. There will be a
press section for working print and broadcast reporters and
photographers on the playing surface of Homewood Field, at
stage right [audience left]. Identification is required;
prior notification of intention to cover the ceremony is
preferred. Limited press parking will be available; please
notify us in advance if you need parking. See above for
contact information.
During the afternoon ceremony for undergraduates, the
university will honor Christopher Elser, who died in April
2004, and Linda Trinh, who died in January 2005. Both were
members of the class of 2005. At the time of her death,
Trinh had already earned enough credits to receive her
bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering. It is
anticipated that her father, Quy Trinh, will accept his
daughter's degree on her behalf during the ceremony.
Because Elser was a junior when he died, he did not yet
have enough credits to earn his undergraduate degree. He
will be awarded a certificate of merit, which his younger
sister, Taylor Elser, plans to receive on his behalf during
the ceremony.
Earlier on May 26, university president William R.
Brody will speak at the university-wide commencement
ceremony. This ceremony will begin at 9:15 a.m. at Homewood
Field. Honorary degrees will be awarded at that event to
scholar, activist and rabbi Arthur Hertzberg; Her Royal
Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand; and
physicist and mathematician Edward Witten of the Institute
for Advanced Study.
Noteworthy speakers at other Johns Hopkins
commencement-related events — at various times and
locations from Wednesday, May 25 through Friday, May 27
— include Francis Collins, director of the National
Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes
of Health, who will address School of Medicine graduates;
Robert Rubin, former U.S. Treasury secretary, who will
speak to graduates of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced
International Studies; and composer George Crumb who will
speak to graduates of the Peabody Conservatory. The
ceremonies mark the end of the university's 129th academic
year. Details on the university's various ceremonies are
listed below.
About the Graduating Class
The total number of earned degrees, certificates and
diplomas awarded is expected to be about 6,131, as follows:
1,450 bachelor degrees (including 1,039 seniors graduating
from the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering at
the Homewood campus); 3,810 master's degrees, 519 doctoral
degrees (123 of which are medical degrees); and 352
