Sculptors Creating New Work for Evergreen House

Ten sculptors selected in a competition entered by 130 artists have begun designing sculptures for an outdoor exhibition that will open May 7 and run through October on the grounds of Evergreen House at 4545 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

The large-scale, site-responsive sculpture will be installed on the historic mansion's front lawn, in the back meadow and along a branch of Stoney Run and will focus attention on the history and nuances of the site and its environment.

The competition for the 10 commissions for the exhibition was judged by Michael Brenson, author, curator, educator and former art critic for The New York Times. The winners are Derek Arnold, White Hall, Md.; Brent Crothers, Bel Air, Md.; Maren Hassinger, Baltimore; Gale Jamieson, New Park, Pa.; Timothy Lonergan, Baltimore; Beth Ann G. Morrison, Baltimore; Wayne Nield, Baltimore; Jann Rosen-Queralt, Baltimore; John Ruppert, Baltimore; and Leonard Streckfus, Upperco, Md.

Programs planned in conjunction with the sculpture exhibition include lectures and panel discussions by the exhibiting artists and a series of sculpture tours in the Wurtzburger and Levi gardens at the Baltimore Museum of Art; at the Walters Art Gallery; at the Maryland Institute, College of Art's Rinehart studios; and in four city neighborhoods.
