Planned as part of the second Collectors Series and designed with historical and contemporary segments to celebrate Evergreen s rare book collection, "Evenings in the Library," presentations of the rare books used by 20 contemporary artists exhibiting new books in "Kings, Hummingbirds and Monsters: Artist s Books at Evergreen," is scheduled for the month of November for the 13th and 27th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Evergreen House, 4545 North Charles Street in Baltimore.

Johns Hopkins University rare book librarians, Bett Miller and Amy Kimball, will show the books selected by several of the exhibiting artists. On November 13, the rare books that will be viewed include Flowers of the Sky, a 19th-century book by Richard Proctor; The Classic of Rites, an 18th or 19th-century reprint of a 13th-century text; Edith Wharton s A Backward Glance; and John James Audubon s The Birds of America. Exhibiting artists William Smith, Suzanne Soles, Janet Maher, and Colin Ives will be in attendance. On November 27, the rare books that will be viewed include the 15th-century Book of French Kings and Book of Hours; Ullyssis Aldrovandi s 17th-century Dendrologiae; and Euclid s 15th-century Elementa geometrica. Exhibiting artists Peter Bruun, Laurie Snyder, and John Wood will be present. These viewings in the Garrett Library will be followed by a tour of the exhibition and a careful investigation of those artists new books.

The cost is $8 for Evergreen members and $10 for non- members. There will be a limit of 40 people for each of the "Evenings in the Library" and reservations are necessary.
