Twenty students at Govans Elementary School will be displaying creations produced during last summer's Teach Baltimore Summer Academy, operated by the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University. Govans Elementary School students will serve as docents, presenting pieces focused on the theme "Reflections on a Warmer Time." Recognizing the impact of summer enrichment on academic achievement, Staples Foundation for Learning will be investing $11,500 over the next year in the Teach Baltimore program, which each year helps more than 300 kindergarten through second-grade students from eight Baltimore City elementary schools. Employees from the neighboring Staples at 5835 York Road will attend the event. Teach Baltimore is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 by two Johns Hopkins University students. The program is sponsored by Johns Hopkins and is entirely run by college students and recent graduates. The program attempts to address problems of low student achievement and decrease the dropout rates through a specially designed and innovative summer education program, taught by trained university students. For more information, contact Ron Fairchild, executive director of Teach Baltimore, at 410-516-6221.
