Awareness Days 2003: Proud to Be
Johns Hopkins Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Awareness Days

Monday, March 31, through Tuesday, April 22, will mark Awareness Days 2003: Proud to Be, the 11th annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Days Program on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

The three-week series of events is organized by the Johns Hopkins University Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance (DSAGA), an undergraduate group. DSAGA is hoping to inspire greater activism and awareness by bringing to campus individuals at the forefront of the queer rights movement, including Public Radio International contributor David Rakoff, MTV's Real World 11 cast members Chris and Aneesa, and transgendered activist Daphne Scholinski.

Monday, March 31, 4 p.m.
Sherwood Room, Levering Union

The Opening Ceremonies will include a general welcome, an introduction to the 2003 Awareness Days program and music. Refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, April 2, 8 p.m.
Glass Pavilion, Levering Union

Chris and Aneesa, recent cast members on MTV's Real World 11: Chicago, will talk about their experiences in being openly homosexual on a internationally popular television show.

Monday, April 7, 8 p.m.
Great Hall, Levering Union

Humorist, author, and This American Life contributor David Rakoff will give a reading from his recent work, Fraud, with a book signing following the event.

Wednesday, April 9, 8 p.m.
AMR I Multi Purpose Room

The Rev. Irene Monroe will offer new insight and inspiration into the lives of queer people of faith. Monroe was recently featured in the PBS documentary series In The Life and writes about African-American gay and lesbian culture and the treatment of women and homosexuals by religious institutions.

Thursday, April 10, 8 p.m.
Shaffer 3

Trembling before G d is a documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality, and religious fundamentalism. Featuring personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film is about people trying to reconcile their love for a faith whose a scripture forbids homosexuality.

Monday, April 14, 8 p.m.
Great Hall, Levering Union

Leslea Newman, author of Heather Has Two Mommies, The Femme Mystique, Out of the Closet and Nothing to Wear, and other works, will discuss some of the many controversies surrounding her books, homophobia, censorship and family values in the 21st century.

Tuesday, April 15, 5:30 p.m.
Mattin Center Room 101

Patrick Webb, one of this country's most accomplished and controversial figurative painters will speak about his work in a slide lecture, "Punchinello and I."

Wednesday, April 16, 8 p.m.
Clipper Room

Daphne Scholinski, currently an artist in Washington, D.C., has appeared on 20/20, Dateline, and Today to discuss her experiences with adolescent psychiatric abuse. She is the winner of a Lambda Literary Award and finalist for a Books for a Better Life Award.

Friday, April 18, 8 p.m.
Great Hall, Levering Union

A DSAGA tradition, the Drag Show and Dance, will feature well-known drag queens and kings as well as Johns Hopkins students. DJ Rosie of Coconuts will provide music for the event. Prizes will be awarded to the best performers.

Tuesday, April 22, 8 p.m.
Milton S. Eisenhower Library Quad
Hate Crimes Vigil

A candlelight vigil featuring speakers and personal stories to show unity against crimes fueled by discrimination.
