Re: FDA Commissioner to Speak at Johns Hopkins
Who: Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., commissioner, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

McClellan was sworn in as commissioner of the FDA on Nov. 14, 2002. Previously, he served as associate professor of economics and medicine at Stanford University. He's been a research associate and visiting scholar at a variety of economic institutes as well as serving as deputy assistant secretary of the treasury for economic policy and contributing as a member of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. The commissioner earner his M.D. degree from Harvard-MIT's Division of Health and Sciences and Technology, and his Ph.D. in economics from MIT. He is board-certified in internal medicine.

What: Johns Hopkins University School of Professional Studies' Ginder Lecture Series. McClellan's lecture marks the inauguration of the new MS/MBA Biotechnology dual degree program — a collaboration with the Advanced Academic Programs in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The lecture is titled "A 21st Century FDA: Protecting and Advancing America's Health" which will address new initiatives to improve the process for developing new medical technology.
When: Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Where: Central Building, Room 127, Montgomery County Campus, Johns Hopkins University, 9601 Medical Center Drive, Rockville, Md.
