Music Scholars Remember the
Music of Maryland's Past

David Hildebrand and Elizabeth Schaaf will speak about "Musical Maryland: Three Centuries of Song in the Land of Pleasant Living" at noon on Wednesday, March 24, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Hildebrand and Schaaf are the authors of a forthcoming Johns Hopkins University Press book that shares the same title as their performance. Hildebrand, an independent music scholar, and Schaaf, an archivist at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, will discuss and perform music that people living in Maryland wrote and sang. Pieces include concert hall music, militia-quick steps, drinking songs, marches, work songs and tunes written for the first Orioles baseball team. Illustrations from the Peabody Library, the Maryland Historical Society and the Peale Museum will accompany the discussion. This lecture is cosponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Press. A digital photo of Hildebrand in costume is available upon request to amycowles@jhu.edu.

This event is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented by The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events, now in its 38th season of cultural programming on the Homewood campus. Admission is free. For further information, call the Office of Special Events at 443-287-9900.
