Sculpture at Evergreen, a biennial exhibition of 10 sculptures created specifically for the grounds of Baltimore's Evergreen House, opens to the public with a reception on Sunday, May 7, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Evergreen, 4545 North Charles St.

The juror for the 2006 exhibition is Julie Courtney, a noted independent curator from Philadelphia. She has extensive experience commissioning site-specific projects in public spaces, including Prison Sentences: The Prison as site/The Prison as Subject; Points of Departure: Art on the Line, a project of temporary site-specific installations in nine Pennsylvania train stations, as well as the current exhibitions: Pandemonium, by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller at Eastern State Penitentiary; The Lost Meeting with J. Morgan Puett and a group of collaborating artists known as spurse, in an abandoned Quaker Meetinghouse at Abington Art Center; and meta/Metasequoia with John McQueen and Margo Mensing at The Morris Arboretum.

Sculpture at Evergreen was described by 2004 curator Jennifer McGregor as "employing research, thoughtfulness, humor and innovation ... in a journey to illuminate this landscape in transition." For 2006, the projects chosen by Courtney continue to "illuminate this landscape in transition" by considering the impact of such issues as the social and political economics of the Evergreen estate, human intervention on the natural environment there, the architecture of the site's buildings, and the collections inside.

The 10 artists/artist groups selected for the show are Bartow + Metzgar, Susie Brandt and Kristine Woods, Suzanne Bocanegra, Alison Crocetta, Matthew Geller, Katherine Kavanaugh, Bruno LaVerdiere, Winifred Lutz, Michelle Rosenberg, and Suzy Sureck.

The opening reception is free to the public. Guests are encouraged to wander the estate at their own pace. In addition to the opening reception, Evergreen will present a number of programs throughout the summer and fall in conjunction with the exhibition, including "A Summer Evening at Evergreen," on Thursday, July 6, at 5 p.m., featuring evening hours for Sculpture at Evergreen, an open studio with Evergreen's 2004 artist-in-residence Richard Torchia, and a dress rehearsal performance by the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival. Additionally, guided tours of Sculpture at Evergreen will be offered every Sunday in June at 2 p.m.
