After riding their bicycles some 4,000 miles across the country this summer to raise funds and spread awareness for cancer treatment and research, 25 students of the Hopkins 4K for Cancer, a student-run non-profit organization based at The Johns Hopkins University, will arrive in San Francisco on Saturday, July 26, by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge at 9 a.m., followed by a ceremonial tire-dipping ceremony in the bay at Crissy Field at approximately 9:30 a.m. (They began the trip in the Baltimore on May 25 by dipping their bikes' back tires in the Inner Harbor.) A complete schedule of the day's events is online at 4k4cancer.blogspot.com/.

The students' mission is to unite communities across the country by raising funds, fostering hope and spreading awareness. Their trip included nightly community dinners, presentations and community service events. To date, this year's effort has raised more than $111,000 for the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, a residence for out-of-town cancer patients seeking treatment at Baltimore hospitals, as well as the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Carolina Panthers' Keep Pounding Foundation. Information about the group and its mission is online at www.hopkins4k.org.
