Owners of antique decorative arts pieces such as furniture, silver, glass, pottery and porcelain can have their items appraised by a professional auctioneer at an event sponsored by the historic house museums of The Johns Hopkins University.

Discovery Day takes place Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at the theater at Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Rick Opfer, president of Rick Opfer Auctioneering and a full-service Baltimore-area auctioneer since 1970, will discuss trends in the antiques market and provide verbal appraisals of antique items.

The $5 admission fee also covers one verbal appraisal. Additional objects will be appraised for $5 apiece as time allows. Please bring photographs of items that are not easily transported.

Discovery Day is sponsored by Evergreen House, an 1850s Italianate home with classical revival additions, and Homewood House Museum, one of the nation's finest examples of Federal period homes. Both homes, owned by The Johns Hopkins University, are recently restored. Homewood is a National Historic Landmark, and Evergreen is on the National Register of Historic Places.
