Anna Deavere Smith to Perform at HopkinsHer performance is a preamble to a spring symposium called "The Power of Words and the Quandary of Political Correctness" sponsored by Hopkins' Graduate Representative Organization. In Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change, Smith combines the power of words and theatrical performance to transform herself into the different voices of the many people she has interviewed during racial conflicts. Both her plays, Twilight: Los Angelos and Fires in the Mirror are part of her continuing series, On the Road: A Search for American Character. Smith's work combines the journalistic technique of interviewing with the art of interpreting their words through her performance. The New York Times has called her "the ultimate expressionist; she does people's souls." Smith has received two Tony nominations, an Obie award, two NAACP Theater awards and other awards. She also teaches at Stanford University, where she is an Ann O'Day Maples Professor of the Arts. She is a native of Baltimore and graduate of Western High School. She now lives in San Francisco. Admission to Smith's performance is $10, $5 for Hopkins students and staff. Group discounts are also available.
