Symposium to Focus on Race and Sexuality

A one-day symposium titled "Race and Sexuality in the Americas" will be held Friday, March 29, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Garrett Room of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N Charles St., Baltimore. The event is free and open to the public.

A distinguished panel of educators from universities around the country will conduct a variety of discussions followed by question and answer periods.

"There is an unspoken reluctance to link race and sexuality," said Hopkins history professor Herman Bennett, one of the organizers of the symposium. "Yet race and sexuality have operated together to define the experiences, lives and interactions of all communities in the Atlantic world."

The event represents the cooperation of several departments and disciplines at Hopkins. Professors Eduardo Gonzalez, of the Hispanic and Italian Studies Department, and Walter Benn Michaels, of the English Department, will lead the discussions, which organizers hope will challenge current scholarly thinking and prompt debate.

The scheduled lineup is as follows:

    9 - 9:30 a.m. Coffee

9:30 - 10:10 a.m. Henry Abelove, Wesleyan University and the Institute for Advanced Study, "The Magical Philosophy of Christian Colonialism."

10:15 - 10:55 a.m. Ruth Behar, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, "Daca's House/Daca's Casa."

11 - 11:50 a.m. Samuel Delany, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, "Coming Out."

    Noon - 2:15 Lunch break

2:20 - 3 p.m. Vera Kutzinski, Yale University, "Performance of Masculinity: Miguel Barnet and Alejo Carpentier."

3:10 - 3:50 p.m. Sylvia Molley, New York University, "Of Queens and Castanets: Hispanidad, Orientalism and Sexual Difference."

3:55 - 4:45 p.m. Hortense Spillers, Cornell University, "Bitching, Moaning and Melancholia."
