Lego 'Surgery' Contest
High School Teams to Build Medical Robots to
Attack 'Tumors'

Johns Hopkins Students will Supervise the Event

WHEN: Demonstrations and Judging from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003

WHERE: 810 Wyman Park Drive (Stieff Silver Building), Suite 180, Baltimore

WHAT: Eight teams (three students per team) from five area high schools will each be given two $200 Lego Mindstorm kits to build a computer-based medical robot. Each completed robot must guide a needle through a cube of Jell-O and puncture a grape suspended in the Jell-O, representing a tumor. While building and programming these robots over a four-day period, the teams will be guided by Johns Hopkins University and MIT graduate students affiliated with the Engineering Research Center in Computer Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology. The finished devices will be put to the test on Sunday afternoon.

PARTICIPATING HIGH SCHOOLS: Southwestern and Lake Clifton, Baltimore City; Woodlawn, Baltimore County; Walt Whitman, Montgomery County; Conrad Weiser, Robersonia, Pa.
