Schools Honored by Johns Hopkins for
Community Partnerships

The National Network of Partnership Schools at The Johns Hopkins University recently announced the winners of its fourth annual Partnership Awards, which recognize excellence in developing and sustaining comprehensive programs of school, family and community partnerships.

The winners, listed below, demonstrate that schools, districts, states and organizations in diverse locations can use research-based tools and guidelines to improve schools by developing productive partnerships among teachers, administrators, students, families and communities.

"In many cases, the award-winners have improved their programs even though school principals, district and state superintendents or other leaders have changed," said Joyce L. Epstein, director of the National Network of Partnership Schools. "These leaders are sending a strong message that family and community involvement is a vital part of good schools, effective teaching and student success."

The 2003 Partnership Award-winners are:

State award:
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

District awards:
- Local District B, Los Angeles Unified School District
- Local District F, Los Angeles Unified School District
- Naperville Community Unit School District 203, Naperville, Ill.
- Saint Paul Public Schools, Saint Paul, Minn.

Partnership School awards:
- Arminta Street Elementary School, North Hollywood, Calif.
- Early Childhood Center, Chaska, Minn.
- Highlands Elementary School, Naperville, Ill.
- Roosevelt Elementary School, Saint Paul, Minn.

Partnership Organization award:
- Families In Schools, Los Angeles, Calif.

Established by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, The National Network of Partnership Schools brings together schools, districts and states that are committed to developing and maintaining comprehensive partnership programs. The researchers work with member schools to encourage, inform, recognize, and support efforts to improve and maintain school, family and community connections that produce positive results for students.
