Staples Foundation to Fund
Second Annual Summer Learning Day

The Center for Summer Learning at The Johns Hopkins University will be sponsoring its second annual National Summer Learning Day on Thursday, July 14, thanks to a $15,000 grant from The Staples Foundation for Learning Inc.

The Center for Summer Learning works with communities to promote the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities for young people and their families. This is the third grant the center has received from Staples Foundation for Learning.

National Summer Learning Day is a chance for schools and summer camps across the country to emphasize the importance of summertime studies for primary and secondary school students. Fifteen sites hosted events last year, including Reading Is Fundamental in Washington, the Central Wisconsin Children s Museum, the Vietnamese Initiatives in Economic Training in New Orleans, and the Parks & People Foundation in Baltimore.

"The overarching goal of Summer Learning Day is to celebrate the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people and their families," Fairchild said. "The event is also designed to raise awareness about how summer programs send young people back to school ready to learn, support working families, and keep children safe and healthy during the summer months."

"Summer Learning Day is a terrific opportunity to mobilize public support to combat summer learning loss and to showcase programs that are ensuring that no child takes a vacation from learning," said Joy Errico, spokesperson for Staples Foundation for Learning. "Staples Foundation for Learning looks forward to continuing our support of this important annual event celebrating education, youth and our community."

Since its inception in 1992, the Teach Baltimore Summer Academy, a program of the Johns Hopkins Center for Summer Learning, has provided engaging, academically beneficial summer programs to more than 3,000 Baltimore City Public School System students. Teach Baltimore has trained 378 college students from 64 institutions to serve as instructors in its program. These instructors have contributed more than 85,000 hours of service to local youth.

Launched in August 2002, Staples Foundation for Learning Inc. is a private foundation created by Staples Inc. to fund charitable programs that support or provide job training or educational opportunities, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. Staples Foundation for Learning has awarded more than $4 million in grants to non-profit organizations and is a national sponsor of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
