Johns Hopkins University Theatre to Stage
"Charley's Aunt"

The Johns Hopkins University Theatre continues its debut season with its production of "Charley's Aunt," a romantic comedy by Brandon Thomas, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, in the Mattin Arts Center's Swirnow Theater on the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

John Astin and his students will perform this classic farce on the loves and schemes of a pair of college students. "Charley's Aunt" is considered one of the all-time great comedies and has delighted millions worldwide. This production's stars are six Johns Hopkins undergraduates: Anthony Blaha, Tania Hamod, Elspeth Kursh, Michael Levy, Praem J. Phulwani, and Elissa Weissman. The play is directed by Astin, the Johns Hopkins alumnus and faculty member who created the new undergraduate theater program. He rounds out the cast along with Loren Dunn, a member of the class of 2004 and a lecturer in the program, and New York stage actress Debra Whitfield. High resolution digital photos are available by e-mailing amycowles@jhu.edu.

The troupe's first two productions, Jeffrey Sweet's "Bluff" and "U.S.A.," a stage adaptation of John Dos Passos' famous trilogy of novels, were well- received by audiences in fall 2004. Johns Hopkins University Theatre now has a permanent home on the Homewood campus in the Merrick Barn, which is currently undergoing renovations. Decades ago, when the school's Writing Seminars Department was known as the Department of Writing, Speech, and Drama, the Barn housed its drama activities. A graduate of that department best known for his role as Gomez Addams in the original Addams Family television series, Astin returned to Johns Hopkins in 2001 to teach acting and directing. Since then, he has led a renaissance of the school's theater program.

The production will run two weekends through Sunday, March 6. Performances are as follows: Friday, Feb. 25, 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 26, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Friday, March 4, 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 5, 8 p.m.; and Sunday, March 6, 3 p.m.

Tickets at the door are $10 general admission, $7 seniors and Johns Hopkins faculty and staff, $5 students. Call The Johns Hopkins University Theatre box office at 410-516-5153 for tickets, or e-mail your ticket request to hut@jhu.edu.
