Olga Y. Lubman, a Pikesville resident and postdoctoral fellow in biophysics in The Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, has received the Dimitri V. d'Arbeloff Postdoctoral Fellowship, which will support her research into the basic biochemical mechanisms underlying cancer and neurogenerative diseases.

Established in 1985, the Dimitri V. d'Arbeloff Fellowships are awarded annually to postdoctoral fellows who show exceptional promise in the biological sciences. The award takes its name from the founder and former chairman of a Massachusetts-based multinational bioscience company, the Millepore Corp.

Under the terms of her award, Lubman will receive $30,000 for one year.

"I feel honored and privileged to have received the d'Arbeloff Fellowship from the Millepore Foundation for the 2005-2006 year," Lubman said. "This award will not only support my research and training at The Johns Hopkins University, but it also serves as recognition of my pursuit of an independent scientific career in experimental biology. I sincerely hope that the work accomplished under this fellowship will be of wide interest to both academic and medical communities."

Doug Barrick, an associate professor in the university's Thomas Jenkins Department of Biophysics, praised Lubman's promising work and work ethic.

"We are really delighted to have Dr. Lubman in the Department of Biophysics. She brings a high level of expertise to our department and to my lab, which is expected to be quite a valuable resource for all of us. Unlike most entering postdoctoral fellows, Dr. Lubman arrived with an exciting research program under way. Not surprisingly, this program, which dovetails nicely with our own research, began to yield exciting findings the day she arrived. The generous support provided by the d'Arbeloff Fellowship will continue to advance Dr. Lubman's studies."

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Lubman immigrated to the Baltimore area with her parents when she was 16. She graduated from Beth Tfiloh Community School in 1994 and earned her undergraduate degree at Goucher College in 1998. In 2002, she received her Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. She lives in Pikesville.
