Johns Hopkins' Evergreen Society Receives Grant, Changes Name
Program now the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen Society, a 23-year-old continuing education program for older men and women, has received a $100,000 grant from the Osher Foundation that will be used to engage additional faculty, provide scholarships and enhance outreach to prospective students.

In recognition of the grant, the program — which operates in three locations across central Maryland — is changing its name to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University, or OLLI.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our program," said Kathy Porsella, director of OLLI. "The Osher Foundation is a highly regarded organization and the grant money will allow for many program enhancements, including expanding our reach and adding to our already distinguished faculty."

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University offers non-credit courses for retired and semi- retired individuals covering a wide range of topics including art, history, philosophy and literature. Courses are offered in the mornings and afternoons on Tuesdays through Thursdays at the university's Montgomery County Campus in Rockville, Md.; at its Columbia, Md., center; and at the Grace United Methodist Church in Baltimore.

Last summer, the institute became part of the new Center for Liberal Arts in the university's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Advanced Academics Programs. It joined the master of liberal arts program and the non-credit Odyssey program within the Center for Liberal Arts.

The Osher Foundation seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. The foundation currently supports 119 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes on university and college campuses in 48 states and the District of Columbia.

With the Osher Foundation grant, total commitments to the Johns Hopkins Knowledge for the World campaign have reached more than $3.1 billion. Priorities of the campaign, which benefits both The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, include strengthening the endowment for student aid and faculty support; advancing research, academic and clinical initiatives; and building and upgrading facilities on all campuses. The campaign began in July 2000 and concludes at the end of 2008.
