What is beauty? How do humans make judgments about beauty and other aesthetic issues? These are among the topics that will be discussed during "Kant's Critique of Judgment: Art, Science and Religion," a conference that will bring together philosophy students and professors from around the world to discuss questions raised by Immanuel Kant's work.
Sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Philosophy Department, the Johns Hopkins Evolution, Cognition and Culture Project, the John Templeton Foundation and the Metanexus Institute, the conference includes lectures on topics ranging from "The Problem of Aesthetic Pleasure in the Analytic of the Beautiful" to "Kant's Stand on Vital Forces." Rolf-Peter Horstmann of the University of Berlin will give the keynote Address on "Kant and the Problem of Purposiveness." Eckard Forster, a Johns Hopkins professor of philosophy, will speak on "Is God the Highest Point' of Transcendental Philosophy?"
Kant was an 18th century German philosopher who is regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of modern Europe and of the late Enlightenment.
