Yantis Promoted to Professor

Steven Yantis, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at The Johns Hopkins University, has been promoted to the rank of professor.

The university's board of trustees approved the promotion at its February meeting. It takes effect July 1.

Dr. Yantis, a 1978 honors graduate of the University of Washington, received a doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1985 and joined the Hopkins faculty in 1986 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1992.

He conducts research in visual perception and attention, and has determined, among other major findings, how an event captures an observer's attention independently of that observer's intentions. In 1994, he won the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology.

Steven Knapp, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins, said Dr. Yantis has worked hard to enhance undergraduate education at the university. He called Dr. Yantis "a leader in research, an excellent teacher, and a valuable departmental and university citizen."
