Hopkins Engineer Will Comment on Russian Earthquake

In the wake of Sunday's devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Neftegorsk, Russia, which killed as many as 2,300 citizens, reports have emerged that the shoddy construction of the town's buildings greatly contributed to the destruction and death.

Nick Jones, a professor of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University, is an internationally renowned expert on earthquake engineering. He can explain how earthquakes of similar magnitude can result in dramatically different death and injury tolls due primarily to the way in which buildings and roadways are constructed, and the composition of the foundations.

In fact, on Saturday, June 3, Dr. Jones will be traveling to Kobe, Japan, where he will collaborate with Japanese public health officials in conducting analysis of injury studies from the deadly January, 1995 earthquake in Kobe. The study is being partially funded by a National Science Foundation grant.
