Security Information SP#4
Johns Hopkins University
Security Office
Shriver Hall, Room 14
Homewood Campus

Issued April 12, 1996

It is with deep regret the Security Department reports:

On April 10, 1996 at about 10:25 PM, Rex T. Chao, a Johns Hopkins undergraduate, was fatally shot at close range while on the macadam walkway south of the MSE Library after a brief verbal exchange with another student. Campus Security immediately responded to the scene. Baltimore Police and Ambulance arrived promptly thereafter. Within minutes of the shooting, Robert J. Harwood, Jr., another Hopkins undergraduate, was detained in Wolman Hall by a Hopkins Officer and arrested by Northern District police.

Rex Chao was taken to Union Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 PM.

Robert Harwood is charged with first degree murder, unlawful possession of a handgun, and the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony.

Information received by the Security Department to date indicates this tragedy was an isolated incident arising from a personal dispute between two students who had known one another for some time.

The men and women of the Security Department wish to convey their condolences to the parents and friends of those involved.

We would also remind everyone of the availability of the University's Counseling Center 516-8278 and Campus Ministries 516-8188.
