First State-wide Summit on
The Role of Arts in Education
Fact Sheet: Background
In the fall of 1997, the state of Maryland approved
standards for arts
education. While many schools around the state--and the
country--have
incorporated arts education into their curriculum, many systems
and school
administrators remain unsure about how to construct an effective
program,
how to teach it, how to pay for it and what students would get
out of it.
This summit marks the first time policy makers, arts
educators and
system administrators have sat together to hear the same
information on the
subject of arts education and to discuss with one another the
pertinent
implications of that information. The summit is being held in
conjunction
with the January 9 Maryland State Superintendent of Schools
meeting,
chaired by Nancy Grasmick, the Maryland State Superintendent of
Schools.
Grasmick will convene this regular meeting with superintendents
to further
discuss issues raised at the summit.
Also on Jan. 9, the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies and the Arts
Education in Maryland Schools consortium (AEMS) will
present a symposium on the subject open to educators and leaders
in the arts, business and community.
