Hedgecock Promoted to ProfessorEdward M. Hedgecock, a faculty member in the Department of Biology at The Johns Hopkins University, has been promoted to the rank of professor. The university's board of trustees approved the promotion, which takes effect July 1. Hedgecock is a leader in the field of developmental biology, to which he has made several important contributions. Among them, his laboratory has identified genes for proteins that are required to guide axons--the part of the nerve cell through which impulses travel away from the cell body--during development. This pioneering work led to the identification of similar proteins in humans, which relates directly to understanding nerve regeneration. Colleagues consider Hedgecock's influence in his field to be immense and praise him for his "unusual and eccentric brilliance." Hedgecock, author of more than 30 professional articles, has been on faculty at Johns Hopkins since 1988. He earned his bachelor of science degree, in biology, at the California Institute of Technology in 1974 and his Ph.D., in biology, at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1976.
