Statement from Morris W. Offit
Chair, Board of Trustees
Chair, Presidential Search Committee
The Johns Hopkins University

Note: This statement was released in response to the announcement on Dec. 4, 1995, that John Lombardi, president of the University of Florida, had asked that his name be withdrawn from consideration in the search for a new president of The Johns Hopkins University.

"We were delighted when John Lombardi contacted us to inform us that he would be willing to be considered as a candidate for the presidency of Johns Hopkins University. We welcomed the opportunities we had in recent weeks to talk with him about Johns Hopkins. Clearly, for the time being, he believes it is important for him to continue serving the University of Florida as its president. We understand his decision. We respect it and we wish him much success in the months ahead.

"We will be moving ahead promptly to have conversations with other highly qualified individuals whom we have identified."
