Radiation

In conduction and convection, heat flux is caused by local temperature gradients in the solid or fluid medium. Heat flux via radiation is different, depending neither on a transfer medium nor on a temperature gradient. Rather thermal radiation is simply emitted by atomic excitation of any substance, and the radiant energy travels at the speed of light, even through a vacuum, until it strikes another substance where it may be absorbed, reflected, transmitted, or scattered.
