United Way Efforts Abound

APL campaign gets under way

The Applied Physics Lab kicks off its 1994 United Way
campaign, "UW & APL: Partners in Helping," on Tuesday with
lunchtime festivities planned for the Kossiakoff Center.
Campaign chair G. Richard Thompson hopes this year's effort,
which runs through Nov. 11, will raise 3 percent more than
last year's record-setting total of more than $343,000.

University schedules lottery drawings

Again, Hopkins will hold three lotteries to encourage
faculty and staff to contribute early to the United Way
campaign. The lottery is open to all university employees who
pledge $35 or more to the Hopkins campaign. Multiple prizes
will be awarded at each drawing, including travel, tickets,
get-a-ways, dinners and services. To qualify for all three
drawings, you must return your pledge card by Oct. 20. Cards
returned by Nov. 4 will be included in the last two drawings

1st drawing: Oct. 24
    Pledge due by Oct. 20

2nd drawing: Nov. 7
    Pledge due by Nov. 4

3rd drawing: Nov. 21
    Pledge due by Nov. 17

Winners will be notified by the Lottery Committee. The
first prize in the Oct. 24 drawing is one round trip ticket
anywhere in the continental United States on US Air. Second
prize is two tickets to each of three Hopkins special events,
including the Illusions theater concert. Third prize is a
one-night stay at The Admiral Fell Inn, including continental
breakfast and transportation from the hotel to the inner
harbor. Fourth prize is a one night stay at the Harbor Court
Hotel. And fifth prize is three hours of service from Carey's
Limousine.

Small pledges can make a big difference

Although $35 may not seem like a lot to a campaign
trying to raise $36 million throughout Central Maryland, you
may be surprised how hard your dollars work. One dollar a
week can provide a full term of instruction for adults who
want to learn to read. Three dollars a week will provide more
than 100 meals for those without food or shelter for six
months. Five dollars a week can provide 10 families quality
day care. And seven dollars a week can provide nearly two
weeks of shelter, transportation, meals and counseling for
someone in need. United Way coordinators will help direct
pledges to an agency of your choice.

University staff and faculty have to date pledged
$257,776 to the 1994 United Way campaign. The
university and hospital combined total has reached
    $278,054.
