Grants for Suicide-Related Research -- The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has provided Johns Hopkins with funds to support one-year grants for research related to suicide (using a broad definition of what might be related).

The grants are available for young investigators (students, residents, fellows and junior faculty through the rank of assistant professor). The research may be carried out in any area, department or school within Johns Hopkins, including but not limited to basic science, humanities, social sciences and clinical departments.

Run for Cancer -- The first annual 5K Run for Cancer will take place on Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 9 a.m. The race, which benefits the American Cancer Society, will start outside Garland Hall on the Homewood campus. For more information, call Richard Burwick at 410-662-9011.


Annual Research Day -- The Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center's annual "Research Day" will take place on Monday, Sept. 13, in the Tilghman Room at the Turner Building in East Baltimore. The Research Day agenda includes a symposium on organ allocation, panel discussion and a scientific symposium followed by Young Investigator award and poster presentations.

Speakers include Claude Earl Fox, of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; William Pfaff, from the United Network for Organ Sharing; U.S. Rep. Thomas Bliley (R-Va.); Maryland state Sen. Paula Hollinger; and Allan Kirk, of the Naval Medical Research Institute.


Open Houses -- Two open houses from the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education are scheduled for early in September. The first, an information session with instructors and current students for the environmental studies certificate program, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in 3 Shaffer, on the Homewood campus.

An opportunity to learn more about the Certificate on Aging Program is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., also in 3 Shaffer. A separate free workshop on recent legislation that affects the field of aging and the elderly, will take place at a later date.

Teach English as a Second Language -- The Johns Hopkins International Society at JHMI is looking for individuals interested in volunteering to teach English two to four hours each week for the organization's English as a Second Language program.

Classes are offered to students, faculty and staff of the JHMI and will begin in late September.

To Your Health -- The Department of Occupational Health Services, in conjunction with Benefits Administration, is offering the following classes to Hopkins faculty and staff this fall.

Yoga: Monday, Wednesday and/or Thursday, begins Sept. 13
6:15 to 7:15 p.m.
Cost: $25/$45

Muscle conditioning: Tuesday and Thursday, begins Sept. 14
12:15 to 1 p.m.
Cost: $20/$40

Weight management: Wednesdays, begins Sept. 15
1 to 2 p.m.
Cost: $20

CPR: monthly adult "Heart Saver" classes, beginning in October, for certification or recertification

Seated massage: 15-minute seated massage by a licensed massage therapist at a reasonable cost (by appointment only).
