New Books Are On the Way for the Tutorial Project

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The Children's Lending Library of Hopkins' Tutorial Project received a tremendous boost last week when Maryland State Delegate Sandy Rosenberg donated $10,000 to the 20-year-old program. In this photo, Wesley Wornum, director of the program, and Nadine Finigan, Tutorial Project education specialist, stand by as Rosenberg presents a book to Frederick Cooper, who is standing next to his tutor, Hopkins student Matt Sullivan. Cooper is one of 100 city elementary students who receive one-on-one tutoring from Hopkins students twice a week.

Rosenberg, who is a cousin and close friend of Jerome Schnydman, Hopkins' executive assistant to the president, offered the gift in memory of his aunt and Schnydman's mother, Florine Rosenberg Schnydman, who died earlier this year.

The gift will enable all Tutorial Project students to receive two reading books of their own every semester and to maintain and improve the program's lending library.

"This gift means so much to the Tutorial Project," said Wornum. "We try to create an atmosphere where the children become hungry for books, and having a good library and helping them start their own libraries make a huge difference in fostering a love for reading."
