Sen. John McCain to speak at undergraduate commencement

The senior class struggled this year with the process of selecting a speaker for the undergraduate diploma ceremony on May 27 after its preferred choice, Jordan's King Hussein, died.

Last week the class arranged for Republican presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John McCain to address them at their ceremony, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on the Keyser Quadrangle.

McCain, who announced his intention to run for president on April 13, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. After a career in the U.S. Navy and two terms as a U.S. representative from Arizona, he is currently serving his third term in the Senate. He is chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and serves on the Armed Services and Indian Affairs committees. He has been chairman of the International Republican Institute since 1993.

President William R. Brody will continue his tradition of speaking at the university-wide commencement ceremony, to be held at 9:30 a.m. on the Keyser Quadrangle.

Other scheduled speakers are:

Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences master's diploma award ceremony: William A. Haseltine, chairman and CEO of Human Genome Sciences Inc.

School of Continuing Studies undergraduate and graduate diploma award ceremony: Steven Muller, former university president.

School of Public Health diploma award ceremony: Antonia Novello, former U.S. surgeon general.

School of Medicine diploma award ceremony: George Lundberg, editor in chief, Medscape, an Internet site for health and medical information.

SAIS diploma award ceremony: George Soros, Soros Fund Management.

Peabody diploma award ceremony: Eileen Farrell, soprano.

School of Nursing diploma award ceremony: Patricia A. Grady, director, National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health.


Engineering School recognizes outstanding faculty and staff

Outstanding faculty and staff members in the Whiting School of Engineering were recognized May 4 during the school's annual convocation and awards ceremony.

The Alumni Relations Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to S. Rao Kosaraju, a professor in the Department of Computer Science.

Artin A. Shoukas, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, received the William H. Huggins Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Robert B. Pond Sr. Excellence in Teaching Award went to James V. Cox, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering.

The George M. L. Sommerman Engineering Graduate Teaching Assistant Award was given to Simone Ferdinand in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Debra Race, a staff member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the Whiting School Service Award.


Naudia Lauder will serve four-year term as Young Trustee

Naudia Lauder, a 21-year-old senior from Maple Heights, Ohio, was elected as Young Trustee by the board of trustees at its May 3 meeting. She will serve a four-year term on the board beginning July 1.

A double major in biology and Spanish in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Lauder plans to spend a year continuing work on a multiple sclerosis project in a research laboratory at JHMI before attending medical school.

Lauder has served as treasurer of the Hopkins chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and as community relations chair and president of the Black Student Union. She also has been a resident adviser, admissions representative, outreach coordinator for the Office of Volunteer Services and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a leadership fraternity.


Moshe Rosen memorial service set for today at Homewood

Moshe Rosen, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, will be remembered at a memorial service today at 4 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion on the Homewood campus. He died April 27 at the age of 67 after a brief illness.

The family of Professor Rosen has requested that contributions in his memory be made to the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. Its Development Office can be reached at 410-516-8327.


Memorial will be held in June for Francis Pettijohn

A memorial service for Francis Pettijohn, widely known as the founder of modern sedimentology, has been scheduled for Sunday, June 27, at 1 p.m. at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Rd., Lutherville. Pettijohn died April 23 at the age of 94.

A member of the faculty from 1952 until his 1973 retirement, he served as chairman of the Department of Geology from 1963 to 1968.


Peabody Prep announces its summer term in Annapolis
