CultureFest '99: 'Global City, U.S.A.'By Leslie RiceHomewood |
Students at the Homewood campus will show off their cultural colors during CultureFest '99, a weeklong celebration of diversity and culture that begins on Friday. The event will showcase some of the music, cuisine, dance and customs of the many campus cultural groups.
Since 1987, CultureFest has been an annual celebration that promotes understanding and appreciation of the different cultures that make up the Homewood campus. Its theme this year is "Global City, U.S.A.," which student chairs Reni John and HanNa Kim say they hope will examine the emergence of a multiethnic and globally diverse American society.

"This is a very diverse campus, and for one week we're going to pay a lot of attention to that," John said. "There are a lot of students here who do not come from very diverse environments. And though there are many cultural groups on campus, if you're not, say, Thai or Caribbean or Chinese, it is doubtful that you'll try to get involved in the Thai, Caribbean or Chinese student groups. So our goal is to create an environment where all the different groups open up and let people know what they are about. Hopefully, it'll be a fun way for everybody to give some thought to their own identities and learn about the identities of others at the same time."
As usual, CultureFest '99 is entirely organized by students. Funding has been provided by the deans of the schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering and through donations, sponsorships and corporate philanthropy. All events are open to the community; for more information, call 410-516-5435.
